General Edwin Walker is relieved of command for indoctrinating troops with John Birch Society literature. First Walker's admonition and the subsequent military-muzzling congressional hearings forced conservatives to take sides and united those who defended him against (they believed) those who placed politics above principle. During these three years conservatives gained increased consciousness that their philosophy was taking root as a political force.
