and you won't OUCH. Sorry, persons under the age of 18 cannot use this site. I do believe age would enhance the flavor profile but I cannot testify to that at this point. I too was taken a little aback by the odour on opening the tin, and as usual, decided not to "sniff" at such a thing bit to burn. Updated review 7-10-2015: The new version of Dark Strong Kentucky is different than what I used to smoke in the late 1990s and early 2000s. A closer look at Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky! Take a flake of Wessex Burley Slice, a flake of Orlik Golden Slice, and mix with just a pinch of HH Old Dark Fired - that's what this tastes like to me. For me, Golden Sliced is a solid three stars, Bull's eye a definate four and Dark Kentucky Flake somewhere inbetween. Orlik's blend was just a tad more complex, slightly nuttier, and very barely sweeter than the Heinrichs' mixture, and had a touch less molasses. Just heavenly. I found that this tobacco delivers a smooth, medium strength smoke, plenty of nice clouds to enjoy. A good smoke. Well worth a try if you like dark ky. If you puff too hard, you can induce some tongue-bite. The tobacco was incredible. Description from SP: This Orlik number takes a mix of select Virginias and combines it with, as the name implies, dark-fired Kentucky, to create a flake that provides a fine contrast between the bright and dark flavors of these tobaccos. Upon lighting, a pleasant, deep taste of rich tobacco overtakes you and a nice taste of molasses. I don't like misleading names and descriptions. Took two, fully rubbed out, to fill the bowl. I dried this out slightly, but not as much as most flakes. Even more surprised was I after removing the liner, looking at three neat stacks of tiny, almost square flake slices, all showing a three-layer cake of dark tobacco on the outsides and a bright band in the middle, each band being of equal width. Rubbed some of it out as I like to try a flake the first time completely rubbed out to get its full measure. Bacon! I discovered it's the pipe I was using and the prep of the flakes. I was introduced to it fairly early in my adventures with tinned baccies. The tin aroma was strong, but pleasant; none of that overpowering sweetness like I found with MacBaren's London Burley Blend. I am reviewing a tin that was produced in 2010,the Orlik production. Very good I will be buying more! I can't call this a mild tobacco. But I don't want to smoke bacon. The flakes pack well, and needed no more than the average amount of relights. Excellent stuff, highly recommended. I'm sure that's where the scent of that was, but I couldn't discern it. Wow! The aroma is almost unbeatable and the fire-cured Burley is wonderfully present. 2000-2023 Laudisi Enterprises, Inc. All rights reserved. The tobacco itself comes in flake form that I like to rub out and , with a little drying, burns very well. Its funnyI was going to try Irish Flake the day I bought this, but the IF was sold outI'm glad I found this baccyand since IF is about $12 for 50grI can wait to try it another day. Only one minus in it - it ends quickly. Updated review 7-10-2015: The new version of Dark Strong Kentucky is different than what I used to smoke in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Thanks for the info. I smoked this folded & rubbed out, with rubbed out being my preferred method with this flake (unusual for me), due to the size of the flakes, they are not rectangular enough to smoke folded in a deep pipe, so I just rubbed them out, or folded in my smaller pipes. The licorice undertone of Dark Kentucy gives this blend just the tart sweetness needed to make this an interesting and complex smoke. For the flake smoker - it's a nice change up. True to all Orlik its very easy to pack and light, smoke is rich and deep, took very little maintenance. I am quite happy that this classic is back on the shelves. Heinrich's has a strong presence of black licorice, and as I noted in my review of same, translates into the smoke. No molasses taste even though it is very sweet. As with many of my reviews, this is based on a relatively small sample smoked over a long period of time, probably five bowls smoked in a two month period. Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky Pipe Tobacco - Cigars International You can't find it on smokingpipes unless you do a google search and there's no option to be notified when it comes back in stock. Very satisfying and great with coffee too (cappuccino rather than espresso). Dark molasses flavors with a low key sweetness. Purchased From: Allegheny Smokeworks Pittsburgh, PA. Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky | PipesMagazine.com $67.81. I would expect a flavor akin to HH Old Dark Fired. Pipe Used: Dagner Holligan, Savinelli Second, Peterson x106, For old-tyme flake smokers. Paddy. However the underlying tobacco is not what I would call strong. When it as reintroduced a few years back, I was extremely enthusiastic and quickly proceeded to acquire a reassuring quantity.
