River Derwent - Ambergate to Milford - Belper and District Angling Club This episode see's me tackle the River Derwent at Stamford Bridge in Yorkshire to try and tempt out some of the resident barbel. Most of the Associations fishing is on the lower end of the river, at Sutton and below, although we do own two sections higher up. It is situated off Wilne Road between Draycott and Sawley. ( see - About the Club ). Long sections of the Dewent are low in fish stocks, with every now and then an area with a good shoal of fish. On the left bank when looking upstream from the bridge, there is a 1 mile stretch, opposite the moored boats. One is in Matlock Bath and the other in Darley Dale. Stamford Bridge can offer prolific fishing (for the Derwent), particularly early season, with chub, roach, perch, barbel, dace and pike present in reasonable numbers. The River Derwent is mostly a deep, slow flowing waterway that runs from the North Yorkshire Moors near Scarborough to eventual join the River Ouse at Barmby. Our river angling is double bank fishing and stretches from the upstream limit at Ambergate, through Belper, to the downstream limit at Milford.

The first is on a Derwent tributary the River Rye, at Butterwick. Conygre Farm at Hoveringham. The main species are chub, roach, perch, flounders, eels, bleak, pike and an odd barbel. At Breighton & Gunby there is is a mile section on the east bank (left bank downstream) that is available for Association members. A full time River Keeper manages the fishery and is on hand to offer advice and assistance. In summer coarse anglers may, in suitable conditions park near their fishing station.
