The Daughters of the Late Colonel: II, 177. Ebenezer Scrooge (/ b n i z r s k r u d /) is the protagonist of Charles Dickens's 1843 novella A Christmas Carol. At the beginning of the novella, Scrooge is a cold-hearted miser who despises Christmas. The tale of his redemption by three spirits (the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present, and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come) has become a defining . But he raised them speedily, on hearing his own name. And they cling to me, appealing from their fathers. You know he is, Robert! You have never seen the like of me before! exclaimed the Spirit. Spirit, said Scrooge, with an interest he had never felt before, tell me if Tiny Tim will live., I see a vacant seat, replied the Ghost, in the poor chimney-corner, and a crutch without an owner, carefully preserved. Hay and coal can self-ignite, but Dickens claimed that human bodies could do so as well. Man, said the Ghost, if man you be in heart, not adamant, forbear that wicked cant until you have discovered What the surplus is, and Where it is. Scrooge had observed this change, but never spoke of it, until they left a childrens Twelfth Night party, when, looking at the Spirit as they stood together in an open place, he noticed that its hair was grey. He was not the dogged Scrooge he had been; and though the Spirits eyes were clear and kind, he did not like to meet them. Spirit, said Scrooge submissively, conduct me where you will. Beware them both, and all of their degree, but most of all beware this boy, for on his brow I see that written which is Doom, unless the writing be erased. In easy state upon this couch, there sat a jolly Giant, glorious to see; who bore a glowing torch, in shape not unlike Plentys horn, and held it up, high up, to shed its light on Scrooge, as he came peeping round the door. ' Scrooge was the Ogre of the family. Which it certainly was. Knocking down the fire-irons, tumbling over the chairs, bumping against the piano, smothering himself among the curtains, wherever she went, there went he. Scrooge reverently did so. What then. And perhaps it was the pleasure the good Spirit had in showing off this power of his, or else it was his own kind, generous, hearty nature, and his sympathy with all poor men, that led him straight to Scrooges clerks; for there he went, and took Scrooge with him, holding to his robe; and on the threshold of the door the Spirit smiled, and stopped to bless Bob Cratchits dwelling with the sprinkling of his torch. Spirit! A place where Miners live, who labour in the bowels of the earth, returned the Spirit. Now, being prepared for almost anything, he was not by any means prepared for nothing; and, consequently, when the Bell struck One, and no shape appeared, he was taken with a violent fit of trembling. The spirit warns that unless his life changes and he has better conditions, he will die. Indeed, I think he loses a very good dinner, interrupted Scrooges niece. A Christmas Carol is a novella, or short story, written by Charles Dickens and first published in the Christmas of 1843.
